Section 4- Articles

Articles are divided into two categories: Definite and Indefinite. Unlike English articles (which are neutral - neither masculine nor feminine), Italian articles are either masculine or feminine, singular or plural.

Rules for Definite Articles:

il is used in front of masculine singular nouns beginning with consonants.

i is used in front of masculine plural nouns beginning with consonants.

la is used in front of feminine singular nouns beginning with consonants.

le is used in front of feminine plural nouns beginning with consonants.

l' is used in front of masculine/feminine, singular/plural nouns beginning with vowels.

gli is used in front of nouns beginning with any vowel, gn, ps, s+ consonant, or z.

lo used In front of masculine singular nouns beginning with z, at, or gn.

gl' is used in front of masculine plural nouns beginning with i.
