Santa Lucia luntane was composed in 1920 by E. A. Mario (Giovanni Ermete Gaeta) (1884-1961), who also wrote the words.

In 1919 he was invited by the Italian Community in Brooklyn. On leaving the port of Naples, thousands of people gathered to wave goodbye. All the street singers (posteggiatori) of Naples sang this song for him as the ship left port.
