Upon returning to Naples, Di Capua entered the song in a competition sponsored by the Tavola Rotonda journal. The song won "second place," with the First prize going to "Napule bello."

This ballad follows a similar pattern to many of the Neopolitan Songs. In beholding the beauty of the sunshine after a storm, the singer thinks of his beloved. He compares her to the sun and finds her brighter and more beautiful.
