The words to O sole mio were written by Giovanni Capurro (1859-1920); the melody was written in 1898 by Eduardo Di Capua (1865-1917).

Di Capua was touring Russia with his violinist father. On one rainy day in Odessa on the Black Sea, the composer was fondly remembering his beloved Naples and decided to put Capurro's text to music.
